This unique, darkly elegant etargere was manufactured sometime around the end of the 19th century, perhaps in the early 20th. It is hand-planed and carved from dark-stained rosewood and consists of three open-sided shelves in the graduated sizes, common in smaller etargere designs. Done in the ever-popular Gothic Revival style, it features classically turned and spiked finials on the edges of each of the three shelves, the S-shaped shelf supports are double scalloped.
This scalloping extends to all four legs and feet, ending in cabriole shaped legs and petite, simple pad feet. There are sharply curved and pointed back splashes on all three shelves and the central shelf possesses an extended skirt. These open-shelved bookcases were most often seen in libraries, studies, or in home offices. The piece measures 37 1/2" high, 38 1/2" wide, and 15 deep at its broadest point. The top shelf measures 29" x 10", the central shelf is 33" x 12", and the largest, bottom shelf is 36" x 13". The entire piece weighs approximately 12 lbs. This antique item is in good to fair condition, although it does show some signs of age and use appropriate wear. It was recently repaired and does show discoloration to the top surfaces of the shelves. Please consult images and message with any questions. Please message with your zip code.
