FRENCH PROVINCIAL CARVED FRUITWOOD CANAPé SOFA. Circa late 19th century Item # 909EZQ22L. With an attractively carved and then naturally worn fruitwood surface, there is a richness about this 19th century loveseat sofa that is quite striking. Designed as a loveseat for two people, the elevated sides provide the kind of draft protection expected from a wingback chair, an element from an era of poor insulation in homes. It is a Provincial piece designed in the Louis XVI taste with the Neoclassical influences found in the tapered fluted legs, bead-and-barrel relief motifs and simple squared acanthus rosettes. With a deep down upholstery in the cushion and bolsters, this is really a remarkably comfortable and enjoyable sofa. The covering is still serviceable with rather minor use indicators, an attractive damask with floral highlights. 34 5/8" H x 58 1/2" W x 27 1/2" D x 17 1/4" H to seat. Condition Report: Early surface with light wear and abrasion. Upholstery in overall good condition with minor discolorations/wear (a few of these are shown in the images).
