Late 18th Century English Mule Chest Walnut Veneers & Inlay

Late 18th Century English Mule Chest; Walnut Veneers & Inlay. Late 18th century mule / blanket chest with lift top and a single, full width drawer. A mule chest is a chest that was made for the storage of seasonal items, especially clothing and blankets. Walnut veneers over pine, although the drawer and dovetailed lift-out tray are oak.

The pine looks to be American, and the case is dovetailed on all four corners. The hardware is either original or older replacements, but likely original. The brass around the two escutcheons are especially nice. Brass handles on either side, these may be later additions.

The interior was lined in pale yellow moire, probably in the middle of the 20th century. Casters were added underneath, probably at the same time. The case is solid and there are no structural issues. It sets levelly and the top opens and closes easily.

The hinges are tight and structurally solid. There are areas of bulge where the pine has shrunk and warped, and the top right corner shows the effect of this, all very minimal.

There is some minor wear and losses to the veneer, but much less than normal. Additionally, there are some very minor veneer issues and losses around the underside of the lid, top of the inner edge of the chest and around the lip under the drawer. Overall, extremely clean and significantly above average for a piece from this era. Measurements: 44" wide, 24" deep and appx.
