A late 16th - early 17th century Italian cassone, constructed from walnut this is a high quality piece, with fantastic colour and patination. The front fascade having a large centre panel with rampant lions and rolling foliage, in the middle a coat of arms set within a small cartouche. The centre panel is flanked by a pair of caryatids, one male and one female, above is a row of carved dentil moulding, and below is a heavy skirt of gadrooned moulding, supported by a pair of shaped feet carved with grotesque figures. The sides of the chest have simpled moulded panels with carrying handles centred either side. The chest has some restorations and old wood worm in places but overall is in excellent condition.
