19th century, American probably Massachusetts. These bench made chairs carved in the Colonial Revival taste comprised of four side chairs and two arm chairs.
The master arm chair has an elaborately carved ribbon tied crest above a carved woven basket within an oval surround above foliate sprays and berry sprigs with S-scrolled molded borders. The chair back with scrolled ears on molded supports centering a heart shaped splat with leaf tip borders on pierced supports. The out-scrolled arms with rolled handgrips on incurved supports, centering the trapezoidal seat frame fitted with a custom needlepoint seat cover wrought by a relative of the previous owner in 1957. The second armchair and side chairs each with fan shaped crest joined to the scrolling crest rail with backswept molded ears. Each shield form splat with foliate edges joined to pierced supports.
Each trapezoidal custom needlepoint seat is wrought with floral sprays. NOTE: The chairs have handwritten labels which are attached to the seat rail identifying the original owners family who lived in Melrose, Massachusetts. Additional labels identify the family maker who produced the seat covers, previously noted as done in 1957. SIZE: Master arm chair is 59-1/2 h x 26-1/2 w x 24 d.
