Antique Early American Folding Child's Arm Chair, Late Windsor Style ca. 1835-65

Rare Antique Early American Folding Child's Camp Chair, Original Finish, Late Windsor Style, Circa 1835-65. This rare and innovative folding child's chair is an unusual survival and was designed for small children 2-5 years of age. It is constructed of turned and carved elements in an easily worked hardwood, possibly tulip poplar wood, which retains its original dark brown paint or stain. The refined folding x-stretchers have the profile of Windsor chair legs and are carved into a flattened type that is reminiscent of Sheraton fancy chair stretchers circa 1810.

The arms are likewise very early in style and are similar to many Early American country armchairs of the late 1700's to early 1800's. This chair was probably made in the Northeast from Southern New England and the Mid-Atlantic States westward through Pennsylvania and Ohio. This geographic area corresponds roughly to the range of tulip poplar trees from the type of wood used to make this chair. The chair folds to a limited extent but enough to allow an adult to carry at least 6 chairs out into the field for a picnic or other gathering. The upholstery is a vintage replacement but is attractive and appropriate in a muted sage green with deep red highlights woven tapestry or carpet bag type fabric (shows some wear).

This rare and unusual form of child's chair would complement a collection of original finish American country furniture. It might also appeal to early doll collectors to display some fabulous early rag dolls!!

Structure intact, tight and sturdy. Minor repair to the right hand turned seat rail including some gluing and filling of cracks caused by some upholstery nails. The dry surface finish is original and is a burnt umber color paint or stain. Minor wear overall, more evident on the front folding x-stretchers and arms. Upholstery is a slightly worn vintage tapestry or carpet bag type material, which was added more recently.

Wear and patina commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 21-3/4" tall x 14" wide (at seat); 11-1/4" wide (at top of back) x 11-1/2" deep (at seat). This item is in the category "Antiques\Furniture\Chairs". The seller is "fab-antiques*vintage" and is located in this country: US.
