Early Antique Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk (late 1800s)
Early Antique Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk (late 1800s). This piece is an early Louis Vuitton Steamer Trunk from the late 1800s. It was owned by the prestigious Doubleday family. While they owned it, they had the trunk retouched by Crouch and Fitzgerald (another trunk maker). The trunk was painted blue and all of the rivets, clasps, locks, and other metal hardware was replaced by Crouch and Fitzgerald.

You can see C&F on the main clasp in the pictures above. Because the trunk is such an old antique, some of the blue paint from when it was redone is peeling. Underneath you can see the Rayee Stripes that the case originally donned.

This is a multilayered piece. It speaks through its wear and tear. The blue coat on it speaks to its touch up from Crouch and Fitzgerald, while the Rayee Stripes that shine through the cracks in the paint reveal the trunks true heritage as a Louis Vuitton Masterpiece.

At the same time its ownership by the Doubleday family lends it even more history, rendering it an artifact of sorts.
