Large 18th Century George III Flame Mahogany Linen Press. This is a large and exquisitely designed George III flame mahogany linen press made in England during the late18th century. The upper cabinet is capped with a molded cornice.
Two large panel doors below the frieze unlock to reveal a set of three shelves. The lower case has four graduated drawers, working locks and classically-shaped bracket feet. The traditional brass bail pulls with Chippendale style backplates and locks are original. This stately, two-part linen press is made of mahogany, one of the finest hardwoods for furniture-making having withstood the test of time for stability, fine grain pattern and rich, consistent coloring that finishes beautifully. The mahogany used for this piece is a wonderful example of the grain variation and figuring that happens at the point where a large branch grows from a trees truck.
The extreme compression of wood fibers at this joint adds strength to support the branchs weight, and is what creates the majestic grain variation and figuring seen in this piece.
