LATE 18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE PENNSYLVANIA TIGER MALE & WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS / DRESSER CIRCA 1790/1800 - RARE GLASS KNOBS. Bay Colony Antiques is pleased to offer for sale this fantastic late 18th century / early 19th century antique Pennsylvania Tiger Maple & Walnut chest of drawers.
The chest features an oversized top drawer, beautifully framed by cathedral-formed crotch Walnut inlaid panels. Just below these Walnut panels, the chest is adorned with fully formed Tiger Maple columns, gracefully flanking the lower three drawers. Each of these drawers is accentuated with a Burled Walnut band inlay, creating a striking contrast against the vibrant Tiger Maple wood.
The chest retains 6 of its original Sandwich glass pulls with two appropriate opalescent glass replacements on the bottom drawer. The original knobs that did survive are exceedingly rare designs and even with our giant stockpile of old hardware, and all of our industry connections, we couldn't find these exact pulls. The pulls appear to be a variation of a floral rosette pattern with some light etching along first border, and these wonderful marbles scattered amid the center. The pulls are fastened to the drawers with a shank bolt and of the 6 remaining pulls only one has light damage to one collar that we have a standalone picture of. We'll be sure to polish down the edge, so it isn't sharp for our end client. The gallery, once present on this chest, has been removed, and modern caster wheels have replaced the original turned legs. While the original plan was to fabricate new legs, the decision to keep the caster wheels allows for greater mobility, making it easier to move the chest around, clean behind it, or access outlets.
