Late 18thEarly 19th century leather trunk with brass tacks, lock & and key, & brass name plate In. This wonderful leather trunk has brass tacks throughout, an iron handle on each side, and a working iron lock and key. The leather is intact in most parts, although some damage can be seen in the photos. The leather lock cover is detached but can easily be reattached.
It bears an oval brass plate inscribed with the name of the original owner In. No indication of the maker or precise age is present, and the leather straps either side of the lock are are long gone. I see what I believe are several generations of repairs: some stitching, the rear leather hinge (which presumably replaced iron hinges), and portions of the interior, but these simply add more character and history to the piece. This trunk is in'as found' condition and I have done nothing to it, save give it a light dusting. It's a great piece or early New York and travel history!
