The word, miniature, may be debatable, as this handsome piece has quite a presence. Small, beautifully finished chests like this one have long been popular in the best British homes.
The wood used for the main part of this chest is probably sycamore, which is still used for high-end furniture as well as musical instruments. It has a beautiful, buttery-smooth luster that is similar to maple. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of this small chest is its top, which is fascinatingly inlaid with a lozenge-shaped design of various exotic woods, including palm wood. Each drawer has been given a distinctive ebonized stringing and has dovetail construction. The ebonized knobs and the feet are turned.
This chest dates to around 1880. I have had it professionally polished. It measures about 15-1/2 inches wide, 10-1/2 inches deep and 15-3/4 inches high. Personal and cashiers checks also accepted.
