LATE 19TH- EARLY 20TH CENTURY AME RI CAN VINTAGE UNSIGNED WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE, W/MAT BOARD/INSCRIPTION ON VERSO. Philips Madison and with measurements, erasures. Turn-of-the century American landscape painting.
With matting: 14" Width x 11" Height. Image size under the matting: 9. There's some slight foxing to the surface of the watercolor on paper. Aside from this and a few minor spots of water that occur in the watercolor painting's atmosphere, this work is in fairly well preserved overall condition. Most likely done'en plein aire,' the painting is fresh and very immediate.
The piece was found out of frame in an estate in southern New Hampshire and remains untouched. It looks to have been out of a frame for sometime, as the surface of the painting was previously quite dusty.
The mat board has caused some slight acid burn on the watercolor's margins. This is as a result of the mat board not being archival. The colors are still quite vivid, strong and saturated. The tree on the right resting at an angle above a rise over the pond is incredibly well realized. An exciting, visually arresting turn-of-the century American watercolor landscape painting.
