Here is an attractive and nicely marked faux tortoiseshell hair comb from the later part of the Victorian era. The comb has an oval shaped heading with a solid panel in the centre. This is beautifully marked with "tiger like" stripes of light and darker brown and amber in a true tortoise like manner. The panel is surrounded by a wide open work border which features a graduated design of naturalistic flowers and their leaves.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large shell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top which stands proud of the top of the head is often called a mantilla.
