Yes; that's The Clocksmith fifty years ago. T hroughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, J. Elliott produced premier quality traditional clocks benchcrafted at the family owned Croydon facility. The firm was one of less than a handful of British clockmakers operating their own cabinet shop. Elliott steadfastly refused to compromise quality.Not a single element is plastic. Even wood strips securing glass are finished.
The mahogany case with push-button front door release survived 75 years absent shrinkage, veneer cracks or lifting. The high luster closed pore rubbed lacquer finish displays marvelous sheen, patina and colour. Elliott's proprietary machined brass "T" winding key is unparalleled in the industry. The 8-day spring-driven movement with thick brass plates and cut steel pinions incorporates several features unique to Elliott manufacture. Among them, a back mounted knob for selecting quarter-hour Westminster chimes on four bronze rods, or eight note Whittington melody.
Hours are counted on three hammers striking simultaneously. The jeweled lever escapement platform was produced in France exclusively for Elliott clocks. The 15.5 high, 11.3 lbs mantel clock displays handsomely.
It is offered in good operating order, checked over to ensure reliability. NOTE: At some point, the star wheel with snail cam operating automatic night silence was removed. However, chime and strike can be manually turned off using the selector arm extending through the dial at 3:00 o'clock. Please review descriptive information and study the photographs for details.
