This listing is for an early American blanket chest. This chest dates to the late 18th century, possibly very early 19th century. The carved chest itself is a New England piece, possibly from Vermont or Connecticut. The chest is painted in a red, almost calico pattern with floral motifs on the front.
We were told that these folk art designs might be the work of the Pennsylvania Dutch. The chest top opens, revealing a spacious inner and smaller divider on one side. 46.5 x 21.75 x 17.5 inches. This blanket chest is sturdy and is in great shape for its age. There are signs of minor repair, including paint touch ups on edges and a removed locking mechanism. The lock is not necessary and was probably removed due to a possibly missing key. There are also signs of normal wear and age, including fading of colors in some areas and some age splits in the wood (which appear to have been repaired). We are in Los Angeles, California.
